Services and users
The bwSync&Share service is an online storage service available to employees and students of universities and universities of applied sciences in the state of Baden-Württemberg. The service enables authorized users to synchronize their data between their desktops, mobile devices and the storage systems of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Furthermore, a user can make his stored data accessible to other users (including external partners/guests) by assigning appropriate access rights.
To synchronize data between user devices and KIT storage systems, the KIT provides client software for download for different platforms (Linux, Windows, macOS, iOS, , Android). Additionally, the data can also be accessed across platforms via a web browser.
Data privacy
When registering for the bwSync&Share service, the following user information is transmitted from the home institution to the service provider KIT in encrypted form and stored there:
- first and last name
- e-mail address
- home institution
- unique user ID (EPPN & persistent ID)
- status of the user (student, co-worker, guest)
With your consent, you agree that the above data may be transferred to KIT for the purpose of authentication and service provision.

The amount of storage space available to a user is limited to 50 GB.
Data security
Communication between the user's end devices and the KIT service infrastructure is encrypted.
The stored data is stored encrypted on the KIT's online storage systems. Data access is limited to:
- The user who initially saved the data.
- Other users authorized by the data owner by granting appropriate access rights.
There is no backup in the form of a second copy.
Availability
The systems of the service infrastructure are in regular operation around the clock. During the service time (weekdays from 09:00 to 17:00) the reaction time is four hours. The KIT strives for the highest possible service availability. Planned service interruptions (e.g. for maintenance work) are announced in advance with a period of five days.
