Terms of use for guest users

Services and user group

The bwSync&Share service is an online storage service available to employees and students of universities and colleges in the state of Baden-Württemberg. The service enables authorized users to synchronize their data between their desktop computers, mobile devices and the storage systems of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). In addition, a user can make his stored data accessible to other users (including guest users) by assigning appropriate access rights.
To synchronize the data between user terminals and the KIT storage systems, KIT provides client software for download for various platforms (Linux, Windows, Mac OS, Android, Apple). Data can also be accessed cross-platform via web browser.

Data protection

If you register as a guest for the bwSync&Share service, the following user information is transmitted in encrypted form to the service operator KIT for the purpose of authentication and stored there for the purpose of service provision:

First and last name
E-mail address
Password

With your consent, you agree that the above data will be transmitted to and stored by KIT for the purpose of authentication and service provision.

The regulations of the State Data Protection Act (LDSG) and area-specific data protection regulations (in particular TKG, TMG) in the respective applicable versions are observed.
The rules of the 'Regulations for Digital Information Processing and Communication' (IuK) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (available at http://www.kit.edu/downloads/AmtlicheBekanntmachungen/2013_AB_036.pdf) apply.

Storage space

Guest accounts do not have their own storage space. They use the storage space of the inviter. The owner of the data is the person who initially created the folder or who took over the ownership rights from another user.

Data security

Communication between the user's terminal equipment and the KIT service infrastructure is encrypted.
The saved data is stored in encrypted form on the online storage systems of KIT. Data access is restricted to:

The user who initially stored the data.
Other users authorized by the data owner by assigning appropriate access rights.

Data backup in the form of a duplicate copy does not take place.

Availability

The systems of the service infrastructure run around the clock in regular operation. During service hours (weekdays from 09:00 to 17:00), the response time is four hours. KIT generally strives for the highest possible service availability. Planned service interruptions (e.g., for maintenance work) are announced in advance with a notice period of five days.
